A project of the National Center for Competency-Based Learning (NCCBL), the Civility Movement supports the institutions that most influence how people think, interact, and behave: schools, government, media, workplaces, political organizations, and families. Each setting has its own challenges and culture, so our strategies are tailored to meet people where they are. Through structured curriculum, communication standards, leader coaching, and community engagement pathways, we help each group strengthen its norms of respect and collaboration.

Vision: The Civility Movement envisions a society where disagreements become opportunities for curiosity, understanding, and genuine connection.

Mission: Our mission is to equip schools, businesses, civic institutions, and communities with a practical, actionable playbook—complete with curriculum, tools, and guided practices—that makes civility an everyday habit rather than an abstract ideal.

We provide each major sector with simple, reliable, and practical behavioral expectations. For schools, we offer clear guidelines that help students and educators successfully navigate conflict. For the media, we promote communication standards that elevate the public conversation. For businesses, we help build cultures where employees feel safe, respected, and engaged. For civic and political leaders, we provide tools for healthier campaigning and public interaction. Our playbook expands these expectations into concrete practices, model scripts, and “do-and-don’t” guides that any group can adopt to strengthen trust and improve dialogue.
